Department of Operations, Gobo Office

After becoming a chief of operations section

Changing my status, I feel that I have broadened my perspective consciously paying more attention to people around me than before.

Attitude and feelings to engage in work

My motto is to work in a “fun and bright” manner. I always keep in mind to maintain and improve motivation in the whole office. This workplace has more men than women so that I feel delighted when people accept my opinions and thoughts from female perspective.

Future goals and message for women

I never thought of becoming chief of operations section. I feel that depending on your enthusiasm and efforts toward everyday work, women can assume responsibilities. Under the spirit of where there is a will, there is a way, I would like to continue to enjoy working hard.

<Working under reduced business hours for employees with young families>

Diverse ways of work is desired based on each person’s hope and choice in a changing society. With various kinds of systems, our corporation supports those employees who need to raise their children. We have created more flexible work hours to support male employees with children.

Appreciation for Others & Enjoying Days Spent with Our Children

Opportunities Within the Workplace

I often wanted to give my wife more time for herself by helping out with the morning drop-off and afternoon pick up from the day care center for our son. At that time, it was a rare sight to see fathers doing so as many had to rush to work in the morning and would come home late in the evening. I was worried about it, but after the birth of my daughter I decided I wanted to take a more proactive part in raising my children. I consulted with my boss and colleagues and fortunately, they supported my decision. There are times when I feel that I cause more work for my colleagues, but it is because of the support of the people around me that I am fortunate enough to now have more flexible workhours where I can spend more time with my family. I would like to thank my colleagues for their support.

Engagement with my child; How I feel once I begin transportation to and from the day care center.

When I went to the day care center, my child ran to me with big smile, which cheered me up. My child also felt refreshed when he had fun with other kids. I talked with my child when I went to and came from the day care center by bicycle. This was an enjoyable time and a good opportunity to recognize his growth and a world among kids. I saw some fathers transport their children and other parents engage in transportation with regular work hours. This was a good opportunity for me to realize how lucky I was who was allowed to work under reduced business hours and how lucky my favorable environment was. Moreover, I was delighted to participate in community which was different from my company or friendship.

What I realized when working under reduced business hours

I felt appreciation more than ever to the support I received from people around me by the experience of working under reduced business hours. It just came to me that I would like to support somebody else and try to be useful for others. I realized how hard raising kids were and became aware of my wife’s greatness as well as hardship. I felt much bigger feelings of gratitude toward my wife. Placing myself in a different environment made me realize and think many things. As a member of society and a father, I regard my experience as food for the future.

<Introduction of flex time work system>

With the rise of work-style reform in society, our corporation introduced a flex time work system in December 2018 for office workers in the main office and in October 2019 for each office for the purpose of realizing diverse and flexible work style and to improve productivity. Dividing work hours into “the flexible time” (between 7 and 10, 15 and 22) and “the core time” (between 10 and 15), each employee may set his/her own business start time. We aim to establish a workplace where each employee understands the aim of this system and maintains work and life balance by making aware of “on” and “off.”
※Shift workers and part of offices are ineligible.

Voices from those who are using this system

・I chose working under reduced business hours to maintain life and work balance, but bringing forward both the start time and the end time by 30 minutes gave me enough time for shopping and preparing for dinner. I have come to maintain life and work balance.
・When I come home early, my family can eat out together. I have more time to spend with my family. I can assist domestic chores and childcare, which my family appreciate.
・I can avoid commuter rush, which has greatly reduced my psychological stresses.
・Bringing forward the end time has reduced my commute time by reducing waiting time for trains and making train connections more smoothly. This situation has mitigated long-distance commute stresses.
・Making voluntary decisions on how to allocate work load like concentration on work during the peak season has improved my motivation to work and has reduced over time.
・Bringing the start time back enables me to go to hospital. Bringing the end time forward also enables me to utilize time effectively like increasing time for hobby.
