On 4th September 2020, The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (Kansai) and Kanden Power-Tech Corporation (KPT), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kansai, reached an agreement with PT Medco Power Indonesia (MPI) on a strategic alliance. Through this alliance, Kansai, KPT and MPI aim to develop advanced gas-fired power plants and operation and maintenance (O&M) business of power plants in the Republic of Indonesia in a continuous manner.

As a major group company of PT Medco Energi Internasional, Indonesia’s largest listed energy company, MPI is actively expanding its power business in Indonesia and currently owns or conducts O&M business at 18 power plants with a total capacity of over 3.3 GW.

Under this strategic alliance, Kansai, KPT and MPI will form a joint venture dedicated to the development of gas-fired power plants and O&M business in Indonesia. To this end, Kansai and KPT will bring cutting-edge expertise of thermal power plants while MPI will bring its extensive experience in developing and operating power plants in Indonesia.

“This strategic alliance marks Kansai’s first overseas undertaking to collaborate with a remarkable domestic power developer for continuous and sustainable promotion of power business” said Mikio Matsumura, Executive Vice President, Head of International Business Division of Kansai. “Kansai positions the alliance as a platform to expand its business in Indonesia where electricity demand is growing steadily in line with its economic growth. We are also very pleased to contribute to Indonesian society’s efforts on amenity improvement through the introduction of advanced and eco-friendly infrastructure by utilizing our own technical expertise and experiences cultivated throughout Kansai’s company history.”

In accordance with the Kansai Electric Power Group Medium-term Management Plan, we will expand our activities and investment in power related business in the world so that they will be one of the key cornerstones of the Group’s overall earnings.
